Heaven
If there’s a heaven for motorcyclists it must be like the roads in and around the Snowy Mountains near the NSW/Victorian border. For me that’s one of the nicest areas I ride in. I’m always amazed at what a wonderful time I have there.
Recently I joined friends at an annual birthday event (funny how that happens every year) in Tintaldra. We had a wonderful ride and great celebrations during the evening. One rider did ‘over cook’ a turn and had the unfortunate experience of a low side off. It’s such an awful experience for everyone involved in so many ways but when it happens you couldn’t be in better hands than a group of experienced riders. While the rider did end up with a break in her shoulder and it took quite some time to get assistance, things could have been much worse so we all just did what we had to do. She managed to get out of hospital in time to stop by at
the party but as it turns out she wasn’t that well so I don’t know how she managed that.
The next day I had a fabulous experience as I decided to head off to a town that I suspected would be a good destination for a future organised ride. In a fit of madness I once rode up the Omeo highway from Omeo to Tallangatta. This isn’t recommended for a road bike as there is a long stretch of very rough unsealed road. I now know why it’s not recommended as it was a very difficult ride and not good for the bike. However, the sealed portion of the Highway is fantastic! So this time I headed down the Omeo highway from the North and just before Mita Mita turned off for my destination, Dartmouth. What a fantastic ride!
Dartmouth looks to be a fantastic little fishing resort. It has a nice motel, caravan park, camping along with a great looking pub and coffee shop. What more could you ask for? Combined with how fantastic the Omeo Highway is to ride on I think this may end up being one of my favourite destinations. So I’ll be heading up there in March for a couple of days to explore more of the roads in the area. I’m really looking forward to it.
Returning from Dartmouth was also fantastic. A quick lunch in Corryong and then it was off to Elliot Way for a ride through the mountains and then to Adaminiby. Riding just doesn’t get any better than that. After a short coffee in Cooma I headed up the boring road back to Canberra and tucked the bike in the garage around 7.00pm. Another great weekend of fun with friends and great rides. You really can’t ask for more than that.
